Damilola Ogunsi Supports Social Media Regulation Bill, Criticizes Bloggers and Influencers for Harmful Discourse

Nollywood actor Damilola Ogunsi has lent his support to the ongoing discussions about a social media regulation bill in Nigeria, citing concerns about the detrimental impact of current online discourse on society. Speaking on News Central TV, Ogunsi expressed his frustrations with bloggers and social media influencers, accusing them of spreading misinformation that is shaping public opinion in harmful ways.
“We have turned the society into something else,” Ogunsi said during his appearance. “We have lots of bloggers who are pushing nonsense in today’s society. There are times when you have conversations with people and you hear them use social media lingo in what they’re saying. A lot of people are actually living and having their perceptions guided by what they find online.”
While acknowledging the importance of free speech, Ogunsi argued that certain regulations are necessary to ensure online spaces are used responsibly. Drawing from international examples, the actor pointed to countries like Turkey and Dubai, where social media restrictions have been successfully implemented for the benefit of the public and society. “I understand that we shouldn’t muffle the voice of the people and they shouldn’t be stifled,” he said, referencing the strict policies in places like Turkey. “If you look at how they’re doing it in Dubai, you’d see that they’re doing it for the benefit of the people and the society.”
Ogunsi’s comments reflect growing concerns about the unchecked power of online influencers and bloggers, particularly when it comes to spreading rumors or misinformation. He emphasized the need for accountability in the digital space, expressing frustration with the lack of consequences for bloggers who, in his view, operate irresponsibly. “I believe there should be regulations to regulate how these bloggers operate,” he stated. “You know how bloggers blog from home and say, ‘I’m at home, come and beat me.’ This is the year where we should be doing that, beating them. There are no consequences and people put anything out there, and the society is going crazy.”
His stance aligns with the sentiments of many Nigerians who believe that without proper oversight, social media platforms can contribute to the spread of falsehoods, incite division, and negatively influence public perception. By advocating for social media regulation, Ogunsi is pushing for a more accountable and responsible online culture that prioritizes accuracy and societal well-being.
As the conversation around social media regulation continues to unfold, Ogunsi’s comments shed light on the ongoing debate about how to balance freedom of speech with the need for accountability in the digital age.
