Shallipopi Parts Ways with Dapper Music, Cites Breach of Trust and Transparency Issues
Nigerian rapper Crown Uzama, popularly known as Shallipopi, has officially announced his split from Dapper Music after nearly three years of partnership. The artist, who rose to fame in 2022 under the label, revealed his decision in a heartfelt Instagram post on December 11, 2024. He cited a breach of trust, mishandling of finances, and lack of transparency as the reasons behind the split.
A Tough Decision for the Hitmaker
In his statement, Shallipopi described the decision as one of the hardest he has had to make in his career. He framed it as a stand for all creatives who face exploitation in the entertainment industry.
“This wasn’t a choice I made lightly,” Shallipopi wrote. “But it’s a step I had to take after my trust was broken, my finances mishandled, and my rights as an artist were disregarded. This is about standing up for fairness, integrity, and respect for all creators.”
Conflict of Interest Allegations
One of the rapper’s primary grievances was the alleged conflict of interest involving Dapper Music and its subsidiary, Dvpper Digital. Shallipopi claimed he was coerced into signing a publishing deal with Dvpper Digital, a company also owned by Dapper Music’s founder. According to him, this arrangement prioritized the label’s profits over his career growth.
“Dapper Music and Entertainment Limited pushed me into a deal with Dvpper Digital Limited, another company owned by the same person(s). Instead of prioritizing my growth, they prioritized their own profits, putting my career and dreams at risk,” he alleged.
Financial Transparency Issues
Shallipopi further accused Dapper Music of withholding financial transparency. He claimed repeated requests to access accurate financial records of his earnings were ignored, leaving him in the dark about his income.
“I’ve worked hard, and like anyone, I deserve to know where my money is going. Despite repeated requests, I was denied access to clear financial records. Imagine not knowing how much you’ve earned or where it’s gone—it’s devastating and unacceptable.”
A “Forever Contract” Allegation
In a particularly damning revelation, Shallipopi alleged that the label tried to tie him into a perpetual contract. The agreement would have entitled Dapper Music to 30% of his earnings indefinitely, even after their working relationship ended.
“They tried to lock me into a contract where they’d take 30% of my earnings forever. That’s not just unfair—it’s exploitation and cruel,” he declared.
A Mixed Legacy
Despite the acrimonious end to their partnership, Shallipopi acknowledged the positives that emerged during his time with Dapper Music. Under the label’s management, he achieved mainstream success and became one of Nigeria’s rising stars. Meanwhile, the label solidified its reputation as a major player in the Nigerian music scene.
What’s Next for Shallipopi?
As Shallipopi embarks on a new chapter in his career, his fight against exploitation and advocacy for artists’ rights has struck a chord with fans and fellow creatives. The split marks a bold move for the rapper as he seeks to take control of his career and protect his artistic and financial interests.
Shallipopi’s revelations underscore the challenges many artists face in navigating the music industry. His story serves as a cautionary tale and a call for greater accountability and fairness within the industry.
