Tope Alabi Clarifies Fashion Choices: “It’s My Personal Decision, Not Divine Instruction”

Renowned gospel singer Tope Alabi has responded to critics questioning her fashion choices, making it clear that her decision to cover her hair and wear accessories is a personal preference rather than a divine directive. In a recent livestream session, the celebrated musician addressed concerns about her style, emphasizing that everything she does is intentional.
Alabi explained that her minimalist look in the early days of her career was not due to religious restrictions but financial limitations. She revealed that she has always had a love for fashion but could not afford her preferred style at the time.
“I love beauty and fashion, but I didn’t have the money for it. God has never once told me not to wear earrings, necklaces, or wigs—never,” she stated firmly.
The singer also clarified her decision to cover her hair in church, explaining that it was a personal initiative rather than a divine mandate.
“The hair that I cover in church was never under God’s direction; I did that under my own initiative. It was intentional. I told myself that anywhere I want to minister, I would cover my hair unless I’m called to sing impromptu when I’m wearing my wig.”
She further addressed speculation about her minimalist approach to accessories, stating that her appearance often aligns with the themes of her music videos.
“If you see me in any video where I’m not wearing earrings, just know it is because I decided not to, based on the meaning of the song. I’m a theater practitioner to the core, so I know what look fits each song.”
Reflecting on her earlier days in the industry, she shared that she once wore smaller earrings, not as a statement of faith, but simply because she could not afford larger ones.
“When I want to shoot my videos, I know how to dress for each one. Back then, people saw me wearing small earrings; they just didn’t know it was because I couldn’t afford big ones. I also considered the theme of the video shoot and the location. Do suffering people wear earrings?”
With this clarification, Tope Alabi has set the record straight, emphasizing that her fashion choices are a blend of personal taste, artistic expression, and intentional styling rather than religious impositions.
