Showmax Unveils First Yoruba Original Epic Drama Inspired by the True Story of Orompoto
Showmax is set to launch its first Yoruba original epic series this February, bringing a rich, powerful narrative to life. The highly anticipated drama will tell the captivating story of Princess Aderiyife, the only daughter of King Adegoke, whose journey to power is shaped by personal ambition, betrayal, and the shifting tides of political change. The series is inspired by the true story of the 16th-century reign of Orompoto, the only female Alaafin of Oyo, who ruled the empire during a time of great upheaval.
The story begins with Princess Aderiyife’s seemingly perfect life. Engaged to Prince Obabamiji of Igboho, she is ready to embrace her destiny and marry into royalty. However, everything takes a dramatic turn when a devastating betrayal and a series of tragic events thrust her into a battle for survival and leadership. Confronted with agonizing decisions and the looming threat of enemies both within and outside the kingdom, Aderiyife must rise above her royal status to lead Oyo-Ile through a time of great uncertainty.
Faced with immense challenges, the princess embarks on a dangerous path, making decisions that could determine not only her family’s future but the fate of the entire kingdom. With every step, she is forced to navigate the treacherous waters of power, loyalty, and sacrifice.
The epic series, titled Kabiyesi, is being led by showrunner Seyi Babatope, who shared his excitement about the project. “Creating Kabiyesi has been a deeply rewarding journey. This story isn’t just about royalty – it’s about human ambition, love, and the personal cost of leadership. We’re bringing a unique and powerful narrative that celebrates the richness of African storytelling, and I can’t wait for audiences to experience it,” Babatope said.
The series stars rising Nollywood talents such as Annetta Adebusuyi, Akin Lewis, Amokun Ibrahim, and Patrick Diabuah. Other cast members include Oluwakemi Oladeojo, Olajide Ibitoye, Olanrewaju Ayanwale, Jibola Dabo, and Hauwa Angela Issa. Their performances are expected to bring depth and authenticity to this gripping tale of tradition, power, and the relentless pursuit of leadership.
As Showmax continues to expand its content offerings, Kabiyesi marks a significant step forward in the platform’s commitment to telling African stories. The series will not only captivate viewers with its dramatic narrative but also highlight the strength and resilience of African history and leadership.
Fans of historical dramas, as well as those interested in rich, character-driven narratives, should mark their calendars for the release of Kabiyesi. The series promises to deliver an unforgettable experience that honors the legacy of the Oyo Empire and the trailblazing women who shaped its history.
