HardFacts Studios Presents “The Bitter Feminist”: A Powerful Documentary Challenging Gender Oppression in Nigeria

HardFacts Studios is set to unveil The Bitter Feminist, a groundbreaking narrative documentary that explores the systemic oppression, stereotypes, and challenges faced by women in Nigeria and across Sub-Saharan Africa. Created by Daniel Chukwuemeka and Ijeoma Chinonyerem, this five-part docuseries provides an unfiltered look at the realities of feminism in a deeply patriarchal society.

At the heart of The Bitter Feminist is the story of Ringret, a young woman from Northern Nigeria who survived both rape and forced marriage. Through her journey, the series exposes the harrowing struggles that many women endure while also celebrating their resilience and defiance against oppression.

The documentary, which is set to premiere at the iRep Festival in Lagos in March 2025, amplifies the voices of women who have been silenced for too long. It demands a radical reassessment of societal structures and calls for urgent conversations about gender inequality.

“This project is significant to us,” says co-creator Ijeoma Chinonyerem. “It’s about giving voice to the women whose stories often go unheard and challenging the narratives perpetuating inequality. We hope The Bitter Feminist sparks conversations and inspires real change.”

Each episode of the series takes an in-depth look at a key issue affecting women, including systemic misogyny, the devastating impact of child marriage, restrictive gender roles, the complexities of consent, and the realities of transactional sex. By featuring candid interviews and thought-provoking storytelling, The Bitter Feminist sheds light on the cultural, religious, and socio-economic factors shaping the fight for gender equality.

Produced by Isaac Newton Akah and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Priye Diri, the series showcases the voices of accomplished women who are challenging the status quo. Their stories of defiance and courage will leave viewers both empowered and motivated to advocate for change.

As The Bitter Feminist prepares to make its debut, it stands as a bold and necessary call to action—one that not only exposes the injustices women face but also celebrates their unyielding strength in the fight for a more equitable future.
