Georgina Ibeh Slams Actors for Unprofessional Demands in Movie Casting

Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Georgina Ibeh, has recently taken to Instagram to voice her frustration over a troubling trend in the industry: actors dictating casting choices for films. In a passionate post on November 12, 2024, Ibeh called out actors who demand that specific cast members be included in her projects before they agree to take on a role.

Ibeh revealed that she has experienced this issue on multiple occasions, where actors, after agreeing on terms and payment, would inquire about the rest of the cast. “This is normal; we all do it,” Ibeh acknowledged, explaining that it’s common for actors to want to know who they will be working with on set. However, she expressed disbelief when some actors took it a step further, not only asking about the cast but also suggesting individuals they would like to see included in the movie. In some cases, actors have even insisted that they would only participate if their suggested co-stars were cast.

Ibeh shared her astonishment at this level of influence being exerted on her films. “So if I don’t use the particular person that you want, you won’t act in the movie?” she asked rhetorically, making it clear how unprofessional she found this behavior. She recounted an instance where she had contacted the management of an up-and-coming actress, only to be met with a request to know the full cast lineup before proceeding with negotiations.

“I’ve tolerated so much in this movie-producing business,” Ibeh continued. “But let this nonsense stop today! Nobody should try it with me or GI Films. If I call you, act and go home. Don’t suggest people to me!”

Ibeh’s outburst reflects the challenges faced by filmmakers who are often pressured by actors to shape the cast around their preferences. The actress’ strong words serve as a reminder that while collaboration is key, the integrity of a filmmaker’s vision should remain paramount in the casting process.

This public call to action has sparked discussions about professionalism in Nollywood, with many supporting Ibeh’s stance against actors overstepping boundaries when it comes to casting decisions. It remains to be seen whether this will serve as a turning point for how actors and filmmakers approach casting in the industry.
