Now that the hard work of filling out applications and writing essays is over, you may think all that’s left to do is to wait anxiously for an admission decision about your college future. When the work of filling out applications and essays is over, there are some essential steps you should still take, even though it seems like everything is finished.

Even if you’ve turned everything in, however, there are still some things you can do to improve your chances of admission, and to keep your mind occupied while you wait.

Here are just a few things that could keep you calm and busy while you wait for that response.

1. Decide whether or not to talk to someone about it.

Everybody handles the stress of anticipation differently: Some people like to talk through the stress, and some people like to distract themselves and focus on something else. A very important step in waiting on college decision letters is to figure out how you deal with stress.

If you are the kind of person that does not like to talk about or share issues bothering you, then get busy with other stress relieving exercises that could work for you.

On the other hand, if you are the kind of person that likes to talk about things that bother you, you could find a confidant, or a counselor to talk to. This could help a great deal to relieve you.

2. Monitor your application online.

Universities will most likely not make an admissions decision about you if they don’t have everything they need, so you may want to follow up with schools to make sure they have all your paperwork. If you don’t receive postal or electronic notification that your application is complete, check your colleges’ Web sites or call to ask about the status of your application.

3. Pick a new hobby.

One of the best ways to distract yourself from overthinking is to dive into a new hobby. Since the hobby would be new, you’d more than likely be super excited about it and have a lot to learn. You simply wouldn’t have the time to overthink your University decision letters.

Learn how to sew, how to bake or something. I for example learnt bead-making while waiting for my admission.
