The Nigerian film industry has been dealt a heartbreaking blow with the passing of veteran actor Columbus Irisoanga, fondly known for his unforgettable role as ‘Igbudu’ in the 2001 Nollywood classic Isakaba. His death was announced by actress and politician Hilda Dokubo, who shared her grief in an emotional Instagram post, reflecting on the profound impact he had on the Nollywood community and beyond.
“Our uncle Coli @colu_mbusirisoanga has gone to be with the Lord. Ikoli eh dein na mu. There can’t be a shortage of Angels in heaven that the few here are called home like this na! This one is heavy on Uniport, Rivers State, Nollywood,” Dokubo wrote, expressing the deep sorrow felt by many who knew Irisoanga both personally and professionally.
Irisoanga’s death marks a significant loss, not just for Nollywood, but for the academic community as well. He was a respected senior lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), where he earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees. His influence extended beyond acting, as he mentored countless students who have gone on to make their mark in the film industry.
A Legacy in Nollywood
Columbus Irisoanga’s contribution to Nollywood was immense, particularly in his portrayal of powerful and traditional characters. His role as Igbudu, the commanding chief priest in Isakaba, solidified his place as one of Nollywood’s most respected character actors. Known for his deep understanding of dramatic storytelling, Irisoanga brought an unmatched authenticity to every role he played, making him a fan favorite and a staple of Nollywood’s epic films.
In addition to Isakaba, Irisoanga’s career spanned numerous notable films, and he worked alongside some of Nollywood’s top filmmakers. His impact wasn’t limited to the screen, though. Through his work as an academic at UNIPORT, he contributed to shaping the future of Nollywood by educating and mentoring a new generation of actors, directors, and filmmakers.
Irisoanga’s passing comes just days after the industry mourned the loss of another Nollywood star, actress Pat Ugwu, who passed away at the young age of 35. This series of losses has left Nollywood fans and colleagues devastated, as many take to social media to express their condolences and pay tribute to the late actor.
A Lasting Legacy
Although the cause of Irisoanga’s death has not been officially disclosed, his legacy as an actor and educator remains undeniable. His work, both in film and in academia, has left a lasting impact that will continue to influence the Nigerian film industry for years to come. Irisoanga’s ability to bring depth and nuance to his roles, combined with his dedication to teaching and mentoring, ensures that his influence will not be forgotten.
As Nollywood and the academic world reflect on this significant loss, many will remember Columbus Irisoanga not just for his role as Igbudu, but as a mentor, scholar, and passionate storyteller whose contributions to both fields will continue to be felt long after his passing.
May his soul rest in peace.
