Skales Distances Himself from Burna Boy Disrespect, Calls for Respect Amid ‘Temper’ Remix Debate

Afrobeats singer Skales has made it clear that he wants no part in the growing criticism targeted at Grammy Award-winning artist Burna Boy, especially in relation to their 2017 collaboration, the ‘Temper’ remix.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account on April 30, 2025, Skales addressed the wave of social media backlash sparked after Burna Boy performed his verse on the ‘Temper’ remix at the recent New Orleans Jazz Fest. Some critics claimed Burna’s decision to perform the track was opportunistic, linking it to Skales’ current commercial resurgence. But Skales was quick to shut down that narrative.

“Pls and pls put some respect on burnas name … Burna is not anybody’s mate including me … I’ve been seeing some b.s fly around that is made up .. Burna never said that … leave that man alone .. much respect to Odg,” Skales posted.

His statement was a firm show of solidarity, defending Burna Boy’s consistent support of the song. The ‘Temper’ remix has long been a staple in Burna Boy’s live performances, and Skales made it clear that the performance was not driven by any recent trends or perceived rivalries.

The tension arose just days after Burna Boy headlined the Jazz Fest in New Orleans, where his set included the ‘Temper’ remix — a moment that drew some criticism from online observers suggesting the move was strategically timed to coincide with Skales’ renewed relevance.

This renewed spotlight on Skales comes as his 2014 hit single ‘Shake Body’ experiences an unexpected viral moment. A decade after its release, the track has found a new audience on TikTok, largely thanks to FC Barcelona teenager Yamine Yamal, who danced to it in a series of viral clips. The song’s resurgence has propelled Skales back into mainstream conversations, with fans celebrating the song’s timeless appeal.

Meanwhile, Burna Boy continues to cement his place in global music history. In 2025 alone, he has sold out England’s largest indoor arena and became the first African artist to headline the Stade De France, performing to a packed crowd of 80,000 in Paris.

Both artists are enjoying landmark years in their respective careers, and Skales’ post serves as a timely reminder that respect within the music industry is paramount — especially among peers who have helped shape the global rise of Afrobeats.
