Tacha Sparks Controversy with Viral Critique of Nigerian Celebs’ Met Gala Looks

In a now-viral social media post, Nigerian media personality Tacha has stirred the pot with her blunt critique of the fashion choices made by Tems, Ayra Starr, and Burna Boy at the prestigious 2024 Met Gala. While the trio made history as some of the first Afrobeats stars to attend fashion’s most exclusive night, Tacha wasn’t impressed — and she didn’t hold back.

“I think someone had to say it,” she began in her candid video. “So the Nigerians at the Met Gala did not represent, and this is coming from a place of love.”

Tacha, known for her unfiltered takes, insisted that while she loves and supports all three stars, their looks didn’t measure up to the global spotlight they were under. She began with Tems, whose outfit by British-Ghanaian designer Ozwald Boateng left Tacha puzzled.

“Girl, I get that the outfit was Ozwald Boateng, but it’s very clear you weren’t their first choice. Haven’t you heard of Veekee James or Swanky Jerry? They would have brought the moon down with creativity.”

Moving on to Gen Z music sensation Ayra Starr, Tacha commented that the singer’s outfit felt rushed and uninspired for an event of such magnitude.

“Ayra Starr, you are our Gen Z baddie, the future of Afrobeats — and you showed up in that? It’s giving last-minute, like you weren’t informed. The look is giving Mary Amaka. Please, don’t do it again.”

Even Burna Boy, who often garners praise for his red carpet style, didn’t escape Tacha’s criticism.

“Burna Boy, you always kill the red carpet — what happened? You never miss, but this time, you did.”

She wrapped up her critique by drawing comparisons to local Nigerian events:

“Let’s not even lie — even Priscilla’s wedding served better looks. Nigerians are known for music and fashion. I love my people, but someone had to say it.”

Backlash and Clarifications Follow

While Tacha’s remarks were applauded by some for their honesty, many others took issue with her understanding of how the Met Gala works. Several social media users were quick to point out that celebrities do not always choose who dresses them for the event. Instead, designers typically purchase seats at the Met Gala — tickets can cost up to $75,000 — and in return, invite celebrities to showcase their designs.

One viral response read:

“The designers buy tables and invite celebs. It’s not just about choosing who you want to wear. Do you think Veekee James has $75,000 to buy a seat and dress Ayra Starr?”

Another added:

“Critique the look if you must, but don’t act like you know how the Met Gala works when it’s clear you don’t.”

The online discourse has since sparked broader conversations about the role of Nigerian creatives on global stages and the logistics behind international fashion events. While Tacha’s delivery may have been controversial, her comments opened up a window into public expectations around cultural representation and the growing presence of Afrobeats artists in elite global spaces.

Whether or not you agree with her, one thing is clear — the conversation about African stars and global fashion is just beginning.
