A decade after Skales captivated listeners with his smash hit single ‘Shake Body,’ the song is once again enjoying a commercial resurgence.
In recent weeks, the single, which was originally released in May 2014, has found new life among listeners. Packed with an upbeat Afrobeats production and catchy pidgin English lyrics encouraging fans to move to the rhythm, ‘Shake Body’ is experiencing renewed commercial success.
This resurgence is largely credited to new DJ remixes, particularly a remix by Dutch DJ Onderkoffer. Recognizing the song’s growing momentum, Skales recently officially uploaded the remix on streaming platforms, further fueling its popularity.
Expressing his excitement, Skales took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his reaction: “This is crazy!! With the momentum of ‘Shake Body’ trending again, I decided to officially release this DJ remix I heard in Europe last year and in 10 hours it’s already almost 200k streams with no form of playlist support—that’s craaazy … thank you Jesus!!! God indeed works in mysterious ways.”
Among those leading the song’s resurgence is FC Barcelona’s 16-year-old football sensation Lamine Yamal, whose viral TikTok videos showcasing his dance moves to the track have significantly boosted its visibility.
This commercial revival adds ‘Shake Body’ to the growing list of older songs that have enjoyed a second wave of popularity thanks to TikTok. In 2024, Nigerian highlife and folk musician Mike Ejeagha witnessed a similar surge in streams after comedian Brain Jotter’s viral dance moves catapulted his 41-year-old song ‘Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo’ to newfound fame.
As digital platforms continue to shape music consumption, ‘Shake Body’ serves as yet another example of how past hits can find new audiences and enjoy renewed commercial success years after their initial release.
