The seasoned filmmaker, known for her advocacy against film piracy, took to Instagram ahead of the movie's December 13, 2024, cinema release to express her gratitude to fans while urging them to respect the intellectual property of her work.
This warning comes after Akindele's previous film, A Tribe Called Judah, was pirated shortly after its release, causing her significant distress. To prevent a repeat of the situation, she is taking proactive steps to ensure the security of Everybody Loves Jenifa during its theatrical run.
At the Exhibition Soiree on November 20, 2024, Akindele addressed the public, stressing the importance of not recording or distributing pirated copies of the film. She acknowledged her fans' love and support but emphasized that filming the movie during screenings does not show support for her work.
In her Instagram post, Akindele said, “If you go to see my new movie and you bring out your phone or any device you have to film, then that won’t be fine. I know you’ve got mad love for me as my fan, I know you respect me, I know you support me, and you want to promote Everybody Loves Jenifa, but filming it is not you supporting me. No! You uploading it on your social media accounts is not support. Don’t bring out your phones.”
She further clarified that taking photos at designated areas in the cinema, such as by movie stands, or sharing official trailers and teasers, is an acceptable way to promote the movie. However, filming the movie in theaters is considered piracy and is illegal.
Akindele warned that serious legal action would be taken against anyone caught recording the movie during its public screening. “We must not encourage piracy. We are taking serious security measures to arrest anyone that does that. I love my fans so much but please don’t be caught doing it, because it’s affecting us. It’s killing us. It’s not helping the brand. We need to grow more than this. We spent a lot of money on that project,” she added.
Piracy has long been a significant issue in Nollywood, with many filmmakers facing financial losses due to the illegal distribution of their work. Akindele’s stance is a call to action for fans to support the industry in a legal and meaningful way, ensuring that creators can continue to produce high-quality content.
Everybody Loves Jenifa is set to hit cinemas on December 13, 2024, and with Akindele’s commitment to protecting her work, fans can expect a heightened level of security to ensure a smooth and piracy-free viewing experience.
