Tems Cancels Rwanda Concert Amidst Regional Tensions Between Rwanda and South Africa

Nigerian international superstar Tems has announced the cancellation of her upcoming concert in Kigali, Rwanda, amidst escalating tensions between Rwanda and South Africa over the ongoing crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The Grammy-winning artist shared the news on her X (formerly Twitter) account on January 30, a decision that has garnered widespread praise from fans in South Africa and the DRC for her sensitivity and awareness of the situation.

Tems’ Statement on the Cancellation

In her post, Tems expressed her regret over promoting the concert without knowledge of the political climate in the region. She issued an apology, emphasizing her commitment to being socially conscious and respectful of real-world issues.

“So I recently promoted my show in Rwanda without realising that there is ongoing conflict between Rwanda and Congo. I never ever intend to be insensitive to real-world issues, and I sincerely apologize if this came across that way. I simply had no idea this was going on. My heart goes out to those affected. Conflict is no joke, and I truly hope and pray for peace in this time,” she wrote.

This Kigali concert was slated to be part of Tems’ world tour for her critically acclaimed debut album, Born In The Wild, which has seen the artist sell out major venues worldwide.

Regional Tensions and the Broader Context

Tems’ decision to cancel her concert comes as tensions escalate between Rwanda and South Africa due to Rwanda’s alleged support of the M23 Rebel Group, which has been fighting to overthrow the DRC government.

The crisis has led to strained relations between the nations, highlighted by a recent incident involving South African peacekeeping forces. In a post on X, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the tragic deaths of over a dozen South African soldiers deployed in the DRC as part of a peacekeeping mission.

President Ramaphosa further referred to the Rwandan military as a “militia,” a statement that prompted a swift response from Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame. In his statement, Kagame signaled Rwanda’s readiness to confront South Africa “in any context it chooses,” escalating the rhetoric and heightening tensions in the region.

A Thoughtful Move Praised by Fans

Tems’ announcement has resonated deeply with fans, especially in South Africa and the DRC, who have lauded her for taking a stand and demonstrating empathy. The singer’s thoughtful approach highlights her growing reputation as an artist who uses her platform responsibly and remains attuned to global issues.

The Broader Impact of the Decision

While the cancellation may disappoint fans in Rwanda, it underscores the importance of sensitivity to political and social contexts when planning international events. Tems’ action serves as a reminder that music and entertainment are not isolated from the realities of global conflict and diplomacy.

As the crisis in the DRC continues, artists, entertainers, and other global figures are increasingly called upon to use their platforms to promote awareness, peace, and unity.

For fans of Tems, her Born In The Wild world tour continues to captivate audiences worldwide, and her message of hope and understanding in light of the recent developments adds depth to her artistic journey.
