How should African Woman dress?
The mini skirt debate has been ongoing for the past couple of years.
In some African capital cities, it is very evident that wearing a miniskirt can get you hurt, arrested or even imprisoned.
A recent TV show in the Democratic Republic of Congo had a poll. Where the people were asked what could be the reason for increases in divorces rates in Kinshasa. Most respondent said that it was because of the way young girls dressed up.
As much as Africa is becoming “democratic” and all types of freedom is being promoted, the question on the boundaries still linger.
In South Africa, there has been public stripping of women in miniskirts in 2008 and 2011.
It also happened in Sudan, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and Kenya.
In Malawi, then President Bingu wa Mutharika had to issue a statement after a group of men undressed women in Lilongwe and Mzuzu in 2012.
In most of those countries there were protests against the violence.
On the other hand some countries like Uganda and Nigeria have considered public decency laws that would have effectively banned miniskirts.
This debate makes me wonder if woman will still be allowed to “shake the boom boom” in the future, as Miniskirts have been found to be the root of the corruption, killing and poverty in Africa.
In the 1800, our girls were free to dress up or not, but today it is a different case. Gone are the good old days.
