Policeman Sanctioned for Demanding N2000 from Newspaper Vendor
The Lagos State Police Command says it has taken disciplinary actions on a policeman who allegedly demanded N2000 from a newspaper vendor. The 34 year old newspaper vendor by name Ifeanyi Friday was beaten up by six newspaper agents on Easter Monday. He got the shocker of his life when he got to Kester Police Station in Lagos to report the case and was asked by the officer on duty to pay the sum of N2000 for case entry.
The Lagos State Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmus, said that though Kester Police Station was not under the jurisdiction of Golden Gate where the incident occured, the complaint against the policeman’s action had been dealt with properly by the officer in charge of sanctioning.
The Public Relations Officer however did not expantiate on the nature of the sanction.
On hearing this story, a good number of Nigerians could relate to Ifeanyi’s predicament as some narrated their own experiences on getting to Police stations to report cases. As a result, many Nigerians are discouraged from ever going to report cases at all.
