COURSE DETAILS
Music is all around us – in the films we watch and the games we play, on our phones and headphones, in arenas, clubs, pubs and our private spaces. Nearly everyone enjoys music and every society and social group on earth makes and listens to it in different forms and contexts. Many people learn to play by ear and others learn to play music through an engagement with its theoretical underpinnings. This course covers the essential skills required for understanding notated music and the theoretical basis of all western music – whether classical, pop, blues, metal or a myriad of other styles. You will be taught how to read and write music and also be provided with the groundwork for further exploration into more complicated notation and theoretical analysis. The course is focused on learning by doing – as you learn the theory you will also be introduced to its use with practical examples. Theoretical concepts will be explained through musical examples that you can listen to as well as simple musical techniques that can be played on different instruments.
